Through May 17. Affordable Housing Week 2008 will bring local stakeholders together with policy makers and the public to make affordable housing a reality in our community. Fourteenth Annual Bike to Work Day
May 15. On this day, tens of thousands of residents from all corners of the Bay Area will put aside their car keys, don their helmets and bike to work. They will be seen on two wheels, big wheels, tandems and hybrids. Ride your bike to work, to class, to errands or to play. Throughout the Bay Area, dozens of local events taking place during the month of May will get people excited about bicycling and the benefits it provides for public health, traffic reduction and our environment.

Nominations Due
May 16. Annually, the Fatherhood Collaborative of San Mateo County recognizes individuals and organizations who
have improved the lives of children by supporting the involvement of men and fathers in the lives of their
families. For 2008, the Awards Ceremony will be held on June 14 at Coyote Point Park, as part of
Dad and Me @ the Park.
Nominations are taken in three categories: Father of the Year, Fatherhood Advocacy and Fatherhood Service.
Father of the Year Award is awarded to a man who
is 18 years of age or older, who may be a biological father, stepfather, grandfather, or other male caregiver;
resides in San Mateo County (although the child does not need to reside in the in the County);
has demonstrated exemplary parenting skills; and
is involved in the life of a child/children.
Fatherhood Advocacy Award is awarded to an individual or organization that
advocates for community awareness and education regarding the importance of men and fathers in the lives of their children and families; and/or
articulates the need to develop policies and procedures that are more inclusive of men and fathers with children and families; and/or
actively promotes and supports the development of programs and/or services that emphasize men’s involvement with their children and families.
Fatherhood Service Award is awarded to an individual or organization that provides mentoring, educational, and recreational programs, activities or services that benefit men with
children and families; and/or is actively involved in programs and/or activities that specifically target men who fall into at least one of
the following categories:
first-time fathers, teen fathers,
non-custodial fathers, stepfathers,
incarcerated fathers, kinship-fathers or
fathers of children with special needs.

Sixth Dads Count Fatherhood Breakfast and Awards Ceremony
May 19, 7:30 am - 9:00 am. A father's involvement is vital to the healthy development of his children and San Mateo County is working to increase awareness of that. Conversely, a father's lack of involvement has a huge negative impact on his children's development, including school readiness and social skills. This event seeks to publicly recognize the importance of men as fathers, grandfathers and mentors to children; gain support from the business, legal and government communities for fatherhood efforts; gain visibility for the Fatherhood Collaborative; recognize family friendly employers and provide an opportunity for networking around fatherhood activities in the county.
The Keynote speaker will be Jim Plunkett, former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders, Heisman Trophy Winner and MVP of Super Bowl XV. He is also a father of two.
This event is sponsored by The Fatherhood Collaborative of San Mateo County and the government, legal and business communities in San Mateo County. Coffee Talk: The Brittle Truth About Osteoporosis

Mills-Peninsula Hospital Foundation present Coffee Talk: The Brittle Truth About Osteoporosis featuring Ernest Satarain, M.D., Medical Director, Mills-Peninsula Arthritis Program. Osteoporosis is a silent condition until a fracture occurs. The results can be disabling in terms of costs, pain, disability and other medical complications. One of every two women over the age of 50 will suffer an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime; for men, the risk is one in five. Dr. Zatarain will discuss how the understanding of bone health and how to prevent osteoporosis has increased over the past twenty years. Much better information is available regarding which interventions work best and who benefits the most from different interventions at different stages.

Livable Communities for Successful Aging Forum
May 30, 8:30 am - 1:30 pm. The purposes of this forum are to create awareness among seniors about the benefits of living in areas with easy access to needed services such as transportation, shopping and recreation; to hear from seniors as to how San Mateo County's transit-oriented development (TOD) areas can be designed to better meet the needs of our aging population and to generate greater acceptance and support for housing that meets seniors' transportation and other needs.
The forum will educate seniors about TOD, identify what is needed to make TOD irresistible to seniors and engage them in the support of the development of senior-friendly TOD projects throughout San Mateo County.

Tenth Annual Update on Dementia: Translating Research into Practice
June 4, 8:00 am; registration begins at 7:00 am. Hear about the latest research on dementia and Alzheimer's disease from scientists and clinicians at this day-long program. Topics discussed include Mild Cognitive Impairment: The Current Status; Bathing Without a Battle; Love, Sex and Alzheimer's; and "Caring for Someone with Dementia When You Are LGBT: Understanding the Diverse Issues." Physicians, nurses, LCSWs, LMFTs, RCFE administrators and nursing administrators can earn seven CMEs/Continuing Education Units.

Advance Health Care Directives Workshop in Daly City
June 10, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. The Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County is conducting free legal clinics to help seniors prepare Advance Health Care Directives with the assistance of attorneys and law students. The purpose of the health care directive is to put in writing what your wishes are regarding life sustaining medical treatment in the event that you become incapacitated and cannot tell the doctor what kind of treatment you want. You can also name someone to make these decisions for you.
