Modest Needs Grant Opportunities
Modest Needs makes self-sufficiency and other grants on behalf of otherwise self-sufficient individuals or families. The purpose of their Self-Sufficiency Grants is to prevent an otherwise self-sufficient individual or family from entering the cycle of poverty as a result of the financial burden posed by a relatively small emergency expense. They remit payment to a creditor for an expense which the individual or family could not have anticipated or prepared for.

Back-to-Work Grants provide a temporarily unemployed individual with the means to return to work. They cover small, work-related expenses that will immediately return the person to full-time employment. Independent Living Grants, made on behalf of persons permanently unable to work but living independently on a limited income, cover unexpected expenses.

These grants are available for any qualified individual living in the United States. The maximum amount available is $1,000 or an amount equal to the monthly rental or mortgage payment, whichever is greater.

Modest Needs also has a Nonprofit Grant program. The maximum grant available under this program is $5,000. An organization is eligible to apply for this grant if it meets certain requirements, among them being incorporated in the United States; is physically located and operated primarily in this country; has gross receipts in its most recent reporting period under $500,000; and is not an educational institution.

For more information and eligibility requirements visit www.modestneeds.org/.

No Name-Calling Week: January 26 - 30
GroundSpark, in collaboration with nearly 50 other partners, has announced support of GLSEN's (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network's) fifth annual No Name-Calling Week. During the week of January 26 - 30, schools serving grades five through eight across the nation will take part in a week of educational activities aimed at stopping name-calling and verbal bullying of all kinds.

No Name-Calling Week seeks to spark a national dialogue about the problem of name-calling in schools. A resource guide with lesson plans, a video for classroom use and other promotional materials will be available for educators to assist in facilitating the week's activities. Although the project is targeted at fifth through eighth grades, when the problem of name-calling is particularly acute, the concept can be easily adapted by students and educators at other grade levels. Students age five to fifteen are eligible to participate in the "Creative Expression Contest," in which they can win free GroundSpark films and other prizes.

The "Creative Expression Contest" is an opportunity for students to submit essays, poetry, music, original artwork or other pieces that convey their ideas for putting a stop to verbal bullying in their schools and communities. The goal is to have students working on their art pieces during the week as a way to learn about and deal with name-calling and bullying. For more information on this weeklong event and corresponding contest visit www.NoNameCallingWeek.org.
