Free2Give Campaign
In the spirit of the season, PLS (Peninsula Library System), BALIS (Bay Area Library and Information System) and SVLS (Silicon Valley Library System), serving the communities of Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties have announced the launch of their free2Give campaign.

Free2Give is designed to encourage giving and a spirit of generosity during the months of November and December, especially in light of the economic downturn. In cooperation with the Second Harvest Food Bank and other Food Banks in the Bay Area, food barrels will be placed in Bay Area libraries and wrapped with the free2Give logo.

Public libraries endeavor to position themselves as central to the people they serve and hope that by encouraging participation in local food drive initiatives, and raising awareness regarding the need, they can be a link to resources for their communities.

The economic crisis is creating increased demand at the nation's food pantries and soup kitchens. At the same time, food banks are suffering from a falloff in donations. The Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties report a fifty percent drop in corporate donations. A spokesman for the Alameda County Community Food Bank said calls to their emergency food line are up 39% over last year and 59% as compared with two years ago.

Support free2Give at your local library. For more information visit plsinfo.org and click on free2Give.
