Add extended relatives, friends, plane delays and inflated expectations into the mix and stir and you've got an explosive recipe. Instead of cruising through Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukah and Kwanza by inhaling every sugary treat in sight, explore the process of balancing awareness and indulgence. Identify strategies for the holiday table, expand your intuition about what your body actually likes and receive recipes for desserts made with natural sweeteners.
Location: Health Services Building, 225 - 37th Avenue, Room 100, San Mateo.
The meeting is free and open to the public. For more information contact NAMI at 650-638-0800.

San Mateo High School Canned Food Drive: November 21 - December 8
This year shoppers at many San Mateo area supermarkets between November 21 and December 8 will be greeted by students from San Mateo High School asking for donations of food and/or money to their annual Canned Food Drive. The drive benefits Samaritan House, an organization that helps about 7,500 needy people, half of whom are children, throughout San Mateo County, and Second Harvest Food Bank of San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. Several years ago, the school was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records for holding the World’s Largest Food Drive.
The students count both actual pounds of food collected as well as monetary donations ($1 = 4 pounds). The Drive has earned several awards, including:
- Samaritan House Youth Volunteers of the year (awarded three years)
- Second Harvest Gold, Platinum and Blue Diamond Youth Awards (awarded three years)
- Jefferson Community Service Awards for Students
Contributions may also be mailed to or dropped off at the school at 506 North Delaware, San Mateo, CA 94401. Checks are tax-deductible and should be made out to Samaritan House. Community Wish List Matches Donated Items with Nonprofits
Local residents and nonprofit organizations are invited to check out the Community Wish List for San Mateo County at www.communitywishlist.org, which connects nonprofits with people who wish to donate goods.
The idea of the Community Wish List is simple. Local nonprofits list items they would like donated in order to serve the community better. People like the satisfaction of giving tangible items to worthy organizations; they also get a tax write-off. In addition to receiving goods, the nonprofits make connections with people who may help them in other ways. Everyone benefits by keeping things out of the landfill.
Burlingame Councilwoman Terry Nagel started the Community Wish List in 2004 with a group of volunteers whose goal is to create a model that other communities can copy at no charge. The site is built on open-source software. “In this difficult financial time,” she said, “people may have to cut down on the checks they write, but everyone can clean out their closets and find valuable items that would be useful to a local nonprofit.”
Dozens of nonprofits have received contributions via the Community Wish List for goods valued at thousands of dollars. The site also provides a forum for nonprofits that don’t have funding for advertising. Each organization has its own page, with its logo, mission, services and contact info displayed. There’s even a Google map to help people find the office.
To get started, visit www.communitywishlist.org. The site’s database allows users to search by item or organization. Tutorials explain how the site works; people can also email questions to helpdesk@communitywishlist.org or call Patty Poggetti at 650-347-0987.

Silicon Valley Community Foundation Issues $1 Million Community Challenge for Food and Shelter
Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) announced that it will commit up to $1 million more for food and shelter, matching donations from individuals and corporations as part of a new Strengthen the Safety Net campaign. The new campaign could bring the total for safety net services in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties up to $3 million. Through the challenge grant, SVCF will match dollar for dollar every donation made by individuals and corporations up to $1 million from now until December 31.
In September, SVCF announced new grantmaking strategies, which included an initial $1 million in grants for "safety net" services. The announcement of the Challenge could boost the total available for those grants to $3 million.
"You establish what matters to you in times of crisis and for safety net groups in our region and the families and individuals they serve, this is truly a time of crisis," said Emmett D. Carson, Ph.D., CEO and President of SVCF. "In this economic downturn, it is critical that we all demonstrate the kind of generosity that Silicon Valley is known for and help others weather this storm."
Those who want to donate can do so online by visiting www.siliconvalleycf.org and clicking on Strengthen the Safety Net, by emailing donate@siliconvalleycf.org or by calling 650-450-5444. Checks can also be mailed to Silicon Valley Community Foundation, 2440 West El Camino Real, Suite 300, Mountain View, California 94040, Attention: "Strengthen the Safety Net." For more information about the foundation visit www.siliconvalleycf.org.
