The Forum at Redwood City: A Continuing Conversation on City Design - Leaving the Mall Behind
March 5, 6:00 pm - 7:45 pm.
Architect and retail planning expert Seth Harry will be speaking on "Leaving the Mall Behind: Creating Robust Urban Shopping Districts in a Suburban World." Almost all retail markets today reflect a suburban bias. In moving toward a more balanced, sustainable and mixed-use future, the retail challenge is finding viable short-term approaches for effectively competing in a hybrid market context, while building toward a more legitimate urban model, long-term.

This session will discuss specific issues related to how markets function at the regional level, and why it is so difficult to create competitive urban models in a suburban market context. It will also explore and demonstrate a variety of conceptual mixed-use templates that should allow for a more confident long-term investment in urbanism, and rational, defensible interim strategic models to help us move in that direction.

Seth Harry is the principal and founder of Seth Harry and Associates, Inc., Architects and Planners, in Woodbine, Maryland. He is a licensed architect who has over twenty years of experience with projects ranging from large-scale, mixed-use, commercial projects and retail centers to smaller, mixed-use “Main Street” communities, urban villages, and new suburban infill communities.

San Mateo Public Library Joins Foundation Center’s National Network
Nonprofit organizations and other grantseekers in San Mateo County looking for funding sources now have access to a valuable new collection of resources at the San Mateo Main Library, which has become a Cooperating Collection of the Foundation Center of New York. A generous grant from the Silicon Valley Community Foundation will help establish the collection.

Cooperating Collections provide under-resourced and underserved populations in need of vital information and training with tools they can use to become successful grantseekers. At locations throughout the country, Cooperating Collections offer access free of charge to the Center’s detailed information on grantmakers and how to apply for grants. The Foundation Center’s core collection includes The Foundation Directory Online, profiling more than 91,000 U.S. grantmakers, Foundation Grants to Individuals Online, print directories, and proposal writing guides. Cooperating Collections also hold training sessions on how to effectively use these resources and identify potential funders.

Extended nonprofit resources fit well with the Library’s Franklin Templeton Investments Business Resource Center’s mission. Both nonprofits and small businesses face similar challenges in getting started – creating a business plan, learning to track finances, and marketing their services in the community. Becoming a Cooperating Collection of the Foundation Center will enable the library to better serve both existing and new nonprofits.

Established in 1956, the Foundation Center is the nation’s leading authority on organized philanthropy, serving grantseekers, grantmakers, researchers, policymakers, the media, and the general public. Thousands of people visit the Center’s Web site each day and are served in its five regional learning centers and its national network of Cooperating Collections.

“The San Mateo Public Library is honored to receive the designation as a Cooperating Collection of the Foundation Center,” said Ben Ocón, City Librarian. “The collection will serve as an important resource to nonprofit organizations throughout the Peninsula.”

Camp Galileo Expands its Universe on the Peninsula
On June 16, Camp Galileo, a Bay Area summer camp company, will kick off summer sessions for pre-K through fifth graders by adding a new site in San Mateo to its existing Peninsula lineup. In addition, the camp's parent company will launch a new Galileo Summer Quest program in Atherton for fifth through eighth graders and will offer an expanded scholarship program that makes summertime fun accessible to everyone.

Camp Galileo offers an itinerary of project-based opportunities to innovate. Every day, campers rotate through 75-minute sessions of hands-on, age-appropriate curriculum revamped annually with Camp Galileo's partners at the de Young Museum (art), The Tech Museum of Innovation (science) and Klutz® (outdoors).

Camp Galileo is a three-week program with the option to enroll in one- or two-week sessions. Students attending three-week sessions will engage in all curriculum themes offered this summer. Kids are divided by age-groups (Kindergarten; Grades 1-2; and Grades 3-5) and Kindergartners have the option of part day schedules. Based on location, prices start at $279-$309 for part day and $349-$379 for full day one-week sessions, with extra fees for AM/PM extended care. Discounts are offered for three-week enrollments. Camp locations include: Alamo/Danville; Atherton; Belmont; Dublin/Pleasanton; El Cerrito; Fremont; Hillsborough; Lafayette; Los Altos; Menlo Park; Mill Valley; Oakland; Palo Alto; San Francisco; San Jose/Almaden Valley; San Jose/Evergreen; San Mateo; San Rafael; Saratoga; Sunnyvale and The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose.

This summer the Camp's  parent company, Galileo Educational Services, is launching the Galileo Summer Quest program for fifth through eighth graders. Maintaining similar values as Camp Galileo, such as teamwork and innovation, it will be geared for the older group. There will be three key components: Majors, where campers can select and pursue in-depth a subject they're passionate about; Leadership Crews, where they can develop connections and teamwork skills with peers through multi-day challenges; and Clubs, where they can relax and recharge. The eclectic mix of majors include Magazine Makers; Artists Studio; Video Game Design; Digital Movie Stars; Go-Kart Racers; Sorcerer's Apprentice; Comic Book Creators; Lego Robotics and Young Entrepreneurs. The Summer Quest program is available at the camp's Atherton location; the cost is $899 (discounts available) for a two-week session running over June 16 - 27, June 30 - July 11 or July 14 - 25.

Camp Galileo maintains a strong commitment to making summer camp available to kids of all socioeconomic backgrounds. The Galileo Scholarship Program provides full and partial awards to low- and middle-income families needing financial assistance for Camp Galileo's sessions for pre-K through fifth graders. This summer, 1,300 scholarships will be offered to campers, representing about 10% of Camp Galileo's total available spots at a value of over $450,000. Scholarship applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with deadlines on March 14 and April 14.
