Happy Valentine's Day! The Community Information Program hopes that everyone is staying warm, dry and well and surrounded by love during this rainy season. We love to announce the arrival of our newest edition of the Community Information Handbook, updated for 2008.
Community Information Handbook 2008
The Peninsula Library System, in conjunction with the San Mateo County Human Services Agency, presents the Community Information Handbook updated for 2008. It is intended to serve as a companion to the Community Information Program database, which can be found at cip.plsinfo.org. To request copies of this free booklet, call 650-802-7950 or email gaggero@plsinfo.org. Copies can also be printed from the Web site by visiting cip.plsinfo.org/cih.htm.
Free Tax Preparation Help for Low Income Residents - Through April 14
Last month we announced a free tax preparation service for low-income residents of San Mateo County. At more than 100 Bay Area sites, IRS-certified tax preparers will be available through April 14 to help low-income residents get the refunds they deserve. To qualify for free tax help, last year's income must be less than $42,000. US citizenship is not required. For more information about finding a site near you, click here...
Al Teglia Jobs for Youth Endowment Fund Scholarship - Deadline March 14
The Al Teglia Jobs for Youth Endowment Fund is a component of the PeninsulaWorks Jobs for Youth program which provides vocational and educational scholarships. Scholarship recipients are recognized at the annual Jobs for Youth Fundraising Breakfast, which will be held on May 29. To read more, click here...
Fourth Annual Daly City Women of Excellence - Nominations due February 14
The City of Daly City (DCPR) National Women’s History Month Observance Award recognizes Daly City women whose actions, courage, and vision have inspired a new generation to move forward and strive for leadership and empowerment. The honorees exemplify the shared vision of peace, building community, justice, freedom and the belief that all people have inherent worth and dignity. The theme this year is "Women's Art - Women's Vision." There are four awards categories: (1) Young Woman of Promise (14 –21 years of age); (2) Woman of Excellence (21 years of age and up); (3) Unsung Hero and (4) Honorary Historical Award (Posthumous). A San Mateo County first!
Congratulations to the Veterans Memorial Senior Center in Redwood City for its national recognition as the first accredited senior center in the county. Rare praise indeed as there are only two other accredited senior centers in California (148 out of 15,000 nationally) that bear the same distinction from the National Institute of Senior Centers, part of the National Council on Aging.

A comprehensive senior facility dedicated to the health and well being of older adults by enhancing body, mind and spirit. Provides programs focused on nutrition, social services support, preventative health and fitness, and educational and recreation classes. Works in partnership with older adults to decrease isolation, preserve dignity and protect the quality of life of elders in the community.
The center provides service for 12,000 visitors a month. The classes and programs are designed for persons age 50 or over. Employs the services of over 400 volunteers.
CIP maintains a database of more than 2,600 nonprofit agencies, government programs, community clubs and social, service, environmental and fraternal organizations that serve residents of San Mateo County. In each issue of the Resource Bulletin, we feature one or more resources to help familiarize readers with the depth and breadth of the database.

Meet Lynn Jimenez at the San Mateo Library
February 11, 6:30 pm. Whether we speak English or Spanish, we all need to speak the "language of money." ?Se Habla Dinero? is a family guide to finance in both languages to help overcome fears and answer questions about money, banking, budgeting, and borrowing.
Lynn Jimenez is an award-winning business reporter for KGO Radio in San Francisco. She has delivered business reports daily from the options floor of the New York Stock Exchange for nearly two decades.

Lecture on Drug Awareness for Parents and Caregivers
February 14, noon. Parents and caregivers have the best chance of helping children and loved ones grow up and remain drug-free. Talking candidly and often with children about drugs and substance abuse is critical and helps them build the skills they need to make wise and healthy choices. But how do you know what to say and what to look for if you suspect drug use? Gain the knowledge and confidence you need to discuss drugs with your children, as well as the signs and symptoms of drug use. Learn too, the tragedy drug abuse and illegal drug activity can inflict upon families and society. Presented by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office/Narcotics Task Force. The public is invited to attend this free lecture.

Thirteenth Annual Preschool Preview Night - A Child Care and Preschool Resources Fair
February 19, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Co-sponsored by the City of Redwood City, Redwood City Mothers Club and Bay Area Parent Magazine, parents can talk with representatives of over 30 preschool/child care programs (serving birth to 5 years) from Belmont south to Palo Alto. There will be a 45 minute seminar on "Choosing Quality Preschool/Child Care" at 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm; limited seating will be available.

Presentation by the Millbrae Historical Society
February 27, 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm. In celebration of Millbrae’s 60th anniversary on January 12, Mary Vella-Troseler and Alma Massolo from the Millbrae Historical Society will talk about the history of the city. From the 1860's, when financier Darius Ogden Mills purchased land from the Sanchez family to build his country estate, Mills' "brae" or "rolling hills" has an interesting history.

WOW! Women on Writing Conference
March 1, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Skyline College’s full-day literary conference featuring national and regional writers and editors will feature keynote speaker Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D., author of Kitchen Table Wisdom and My Grandfather’s Blessing. Dr. Remen will discuss “Becoming a Blessing: Remembering the Way We Change the World.” Other featured authors are: Samina Ali, Madras on Rainy Days; Tess Uriza Holthe, When the Elephants Dance and The Five-Forty-Five to Cannes; and Carol Lem, Shadow of the Plum, Shadow of the Bamboo (CD), The Hermit, and Don’t Ask Why. The conference includes seventeen workshops ranging from fiction, script-writing and poetry as slam performance.

CPR Saturday
March 8, time varies by location. The American Red Cross Bay Area is partnering with sister chapters in northern California to provide free CPR training to 3,000 people in the Bay Area, making it one of the largest single-day trainings in the state. The event is designed specifically to provide life-saving training to members of vulnerable communities, including low-income individuals and speakers of languages other than English.

Al Teglia Jobs for Youth Endowment Fund Scholarship - Deadline March 14
The Al Teglia Jobs for Youth Endowment Fund is a component of the PeninsulaWorks Jobs for Youth program which provides vocational and educational scholarships. Scholarship recipients are recognized at the annual Jobs for Youth Fundraising Breakfast, which will be held on May 29.
Youth interested in applying for a Jobs for Youth scholarship must be a current or past Jobs for Youth participant. Interested candidates must submit an essay that addresses the following questions:
1) Why are you are a good candidate to receive a Jobs for Youth Scholarship?
2) How would you use the Jobs for Youth Scholarship to further your vocational/educational goals should you be the recipient of this award?
The essays will be evaluated by the Jobs for Youth Committee based on a clear vocational or educational focus; accomplishments; hardships faced by the applicant; their need for financial assistance and their planned use of the scholarship. To download a flyer with complete information click here.

The awards are non-competitive, reviewed and scored anonymously by a panel of outside judges selected by the nominating committee. Nominations should be type-written, follow the guidelines and questions and may not exceed the space allotted. They must be postmarked or emailed to pbohm@dalycity.org by February 14. Nominees should plan on being available for the March 14 awards reception at the Daly City Women of Excellence Evening Reception at Daly City’s City Hall and Rotunda/Octagon Gallery. The reception fee is $15 per person.

City of San Mateo City Services Academy Spring 2008 - Deadline to Apply February 29
The San Mateo City Services Academy is a comprehensive hands-on learning experience that gives participants an opportunity to interact with city staff and learn about the challenges facing municipal government today.
Interactive activities will give Academy participants a better understanding of the evolving principles of San Mateo's Council/City Manager form of government, including cutting red tape, better customer service, creativity, shared decision making with community groups and increased connectivity with other government agencies. Applicants must be over the age of 18 and live or work in the city of San Mateo.
