High school students challenged their peers to use their seat belts as they participated in the second San Mateo County High School Seat Belt Challenge sponsored by San Mateo County Health Department's Injury Prevention Program and the California Office of Traffic Safety.

This year Half Moon Bay, Hillsdale, Mills, Peninsula, Sequoia and South San Francisco High Schools competed to see which school has the best overall safety belt usage rate. Last year the top three ranked schools had impressive rates - Sequoia (95%), Half Moon Bay (94%) and Mills (92%); however, the goal is to see 100 percent safety belt usage rates at every high school in the county.

Despite overwhelming evidence that safety belts save lives, millions of Americans still do not buckle up every time they are in a motor vehicle - especially our nation's teens. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, teens have the highest fatality rate of any age group in motor vehicle collisions. The fatality rate for drivers 16 to 19 years of age, based on miles driven, is four times that of drivers 25 to 69 years of age. Of those fatally injured, six out of ten teen drivers and two out of three teen vehicle occupants are unrestrained. Reasons for the high fatality rate among teen drivers include inexperience, indulging in high-risk behaviors (such as speeding), driving under the influence, distracted driving and lack of safety belt use. Since July 2006, four San Mateo County teens have died in motor vehicle crashes; one was unrestrained.

Increased seat belt use among teens is a priority for the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). Each year OTS funds High School Seat Belt Challenges throughout the state. The San Mateo County Health Department received a two-year grant in July 2006 from OTS to engage local high school students in the seat belt challenge. The 2007 High School Seat Belt Challenge kicked off on September 24 and ran through October 19. This year the schools competed for cash awards in the amount of $400 (1st Place), $300 (2nd Place), $200 (3rd Place) and $100 (Most Improved Rate).

The winners of the 2007 High School Seat Belt Challenge and their overall usage rates are:

1st Place - Half Moon Bay High - 97%
2nd Place - Mills High - 95%
3rd Place - Sequoia High - 94%
Most Improved - Peninsula High - improved from 80% to 87%

Usage rates were determined from observational surveys of 100 vehicles at each school. Prior to the competition an unannounced survey was performed; another "announced" survey was completed during the last week of the competition. Rates were calculated on both driver and front seat passengers seat belt usage to determine an overall usage rate. Overall Challenge usage rates were determined by averaging the two overall rates from both observational surveys.

Prevention of Childhood Obesity Task Force Tip: Apply For A Love Your Veggies™ Grant - Deadline November 30
The 2008 Love Your Veggies™ Nationwide School Lunch Campaign is an initiative from Hidden Valley that will award $10,000 grants to 51 elementary schools nationwide – one in each state and one in Oakland, California – to support programs that increase student access to, and consumption of, fresh vegetables and fruits during school meals.

Millions of students nationwide consume a meal at school daily, and for many, school lunch is the most important meal of the day. Still, studies show that about 96 percent of children 2 to 12 years of age fall short of the recommended 2-5 cups per day, the amount of which depends on their age, sex, and activity level (Produce for Better Health Foundation and ACNielsen, State of the Plate, 2005).

Each grant award will support an elementary school in developing a program offering fresh vegetables and fruits beginning in March 2008 and lasting through the 2008-2009 school year. Funding must be spent on any of the following:

  • Fresh produce (vegetables and fruits)
  • A vegetable station (such as a dedicated salad bar)
  • Kitchen equipment (primary usage must relate to proposed program)
  • Program staffing (cafeteria personnel, lunchroom staff, etc.)
  • Nutrition education supplies
  • Training - each grant will allocate $1,500 toward foodservice personnel training on topics such as nutrition, food safety and preparing fresh produce. Training will be conducted by the School Nutrition Association within the 2008-2009 school year.
For more information and to submit a proposal visit the grant program’s Web site, www.LoveYourVeggiesGrants.com. Proposals must be submitted by 11:59 pm; late proposals will not be accepted. Schools will be notified of their award status soon after February 1, 2008.
