Welcome to our e-newsletter!
The weather has changed...we've even had the first rain of the year already, and the kids are back in school. The holidays are just around the corner with Halloween in just a few weeks. Halloween costumes can be beyond the budget for some families, so if you have ones you or your kids have outgrown, consider donating them to kids less fortunate. See the article below for all the details.

One Book, One Community Presents Isabel Allende on October 11
The One Book, One Community program presents Isabel Allende, author of Daughter of Fortune, in conversation with Michael Krasny. The novel was selected because its themes - immigration, cultural diversity and California history - are relevant to our community. During the month of October, peninsula libraries will produce additional cultural programs that complement Daughter of Fortune. Those events include speakers, film showings and Chilean cultural festivals featuring the food, music and art of Chile. The interview will take place at 7:30 pm at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center, 650 North Delaware Street, San Mateo. There is no charge for this event. For more information visit www.plsinfo.org/oboc/index.htm.

San Mateo County Domestic Violence Conference: Improving Outreach
in Our Diverse Community

October 12, 8:30 am - 2:00 pm. Domestic violence is a serious issue that affects individuals from every social, economic and racial background. Very often, victims of domestic violence do not report their abuse and suffer in silence. This silence, particularly prevalent among immigrant communities and communities of color, can be deadly. Battered women from traditionally underrepresented populations may face communication or cultural barriers to help themselves and have less access to legal and social services. In some cases, their abusers may use immigration status as a tool of control.

The purpose of this conference is to create a forum where professionals and community members can share their concerns about this problem and what is being done in our county to address it. Participants will also learn best-practices for effective outreach from experts in the field. It is geared toward social workers, advocates, law enforcement, attorneys, teachers, judges, clergy and faith community members, mental health providers, health care professionals, community organizers, students and policy makers. CEUs will be available.

Location: College of San Mateo, 1700 West Hillsdale Blvd., San Mateo. The conference is free. For more information visit www.co.sanmateo.ca.us/domesticviolenceconference.

Being Prepared
September was National Preparedness Month and was about helping individuals, businesses and communities take action towards being prepared for an emergency. Fall is an ideal time for residents to update their emergency supply kits and plans and become better informed. To make it easy for people to learn more about emergency preparedness, the San Mateo County Health Department is making its Pocket Guide to Emergency Preparedness available for free at city halls and libraries throughout the county.

The Pocket Guide is a simple, portable and local roadmap to staying safe. It offers residents valuable information on how to plan for and respond to natural and man-made disasters. Helpful Web sites and phone numbers are also included. Because of its small size, the Guide can be kept in purses or wallets for fast access.

"Recent floods, fires and storms across the nation remind us that a disaster can happen at any time. I encourage every San Mateo County resident to pick up a copy of this guide at their city hall or library and keep it in your purse or wallet," said Dr. Scott Morrow, San Mateo County Health Officer. "Preparedness begins at home. Make a family emergency plan and prepare a kit of emergency supplies to minimize the impact on your family in a disaster."

The Pocket Guide to Emergency Preparedness is available in English and Spanish and can also be downloaded from the department's Web site at www.smhealth.org.
