Commission on the Status of Women Supporting Women Seeking Appointed and Elected Positions
The Commission on the Status of Women is working to
establish a local chapter of the California Elected Women's Association for Education and Research (CEWAER), a non-partisan organization committed to encouraging, training and supporting women interested in becoming politically engaged.

Do you believe in the need for more women creating sound policy? Do you know that there are only 34 women in the California Legislature representing less than 30 percent of legislative seats even though women represent 51% of California's population and that the number of women in the California State Assembly decreased by three in 2006 and is expected to continue to decrease due to term limits? Did you know a lower number of women in the political pipeline will be prepared to run in 2008? If you believe that more women need to be encouraged to seek appointed and elected positions in order to ensure that a diversity of women's voices continue to be part of the legislative process in Sacramento, then become a founding member of the local CEWAER chapter and work to change this situation.

Twenty dues-paying members are needed to establish a local chapter. A membership outreach event will be held October 25 at 6:00 pm; location to be announced. Jackie Speier, former California State Senator and President of CEWAER will speak.

CEWAER members include currently and formerly elected and appointed women, and men interested in supporting women; women who have interest in seeking appointed and elected positions; and women and men who want to be involved in efforts to support women becoming civically and politically involved. As a member you will be kept up-to-date on CEWAER's programs both local and statewide, engaged in key issues and inspired to take action. Contact Honora Miller, Director of the Commission on the Status of Women at hmiller@co.sanmateo.ca.us for more information. To learn more about CEWAER visit www.cewaer.org.

Freedom From Hunger Day: September 28
Freedom from Hunger is a microfinance organization based in Davis, California that provides sustainable, self-help solutions to women in the poorest areas around the world. Their goal is to end global hunger for good by providing women with the opportunity to empower themselves and care for their families.

Freedom from Hunger Day was established in 2006 and declared an official day of awareness by the State of California. The day commemorates those around the world working tirelessly to end their own hunger. You can join hundreds of others making a difference in this struggle.

On September 28, their Web site, www.freedomfromhunger.org, will be devoted to this day of awareness. You will have an opportunity to experience the lives of women who are pulling themselves out of poverty. You can watch video clips taken by staff in the field and download sound bites of women sharing dreams for themselves and their families.

Participate in a live conversation with Freedom from Hunger's President, Chris Dunford, and hear about steps they are taking to end global hunger and poverty. Listen in as staff share on-the-ground experiences in real time in Africa or India. Download recipes from gourmet chefs, including Google's Executive Chef, Scott Giabastiani.

And learn how you can help. Because this year's Freedom from Hunger Day activities will take place online, the outreach possibilities are endless. People are pledging to invite friends and family to join them for a viewing party as the organization premiers their new video online. Gather friends and learn together, start a dialogue, explore ideas and create an action plan.

Freedom from Hunger's Web site will be filled with action steps to help make a difference. A simple step is to send a free e-card to raise awareness about ending hunger. A bigger step is to invite Freedom from Hunger to give a video conference presentation in your community.

Learn more about the ways women are empowered to change their own lives. Step into their shoes and see their communities through their eyes. Save the date: September 28. Visit www.freedomfromhunger.org for a schedule of online events.
