Older Driver DVD Available
As the Bay Area's population ages and more seniors are on the road, questions of their continued driving abilities and what alternatives they have are becoming more critical. “The number of Bay Area residents 65 and older is expected to increase 84 percent between 2000 and 2020,” notes MTC Commissioner Adrienne Tissier, “and the number of people age 85 or older in the region will grow by 108 percent.” To focus on the issue, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) has produced a 36-minute DVD, "Mobility Matters for Older Drivers." It is based on a 2006 Regional Summit on Older Drivers, sponsored by MTC and SamTrans.

Topics covered in the video include myths and facts about older drivers; what happens when a driver is referred to the DMV; new, more visible roadway signage and how families should discuss giving up the car keys with older family members. It features experts from the California Department of Motor Vehicles, California State Automobile Association, Caltrans, the American Association of Retired Persons, and more, plus an introduction by former State Senator Quentin Kopp. It addresses the issue of how older adults can stay mobile while maintaining their quality of life if they can no longer drive.

The DVD is available free of charge; to order a copy email library@mtc.ca.gov or call 510-817-5836. MTC is the regional transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.

Family Service Agency of San Mateo County's "TRIP" Program for Older Adults
Thanks to a recent $250K grant from the MTC's Lifeline Transportation Program, Family Service Agency of San Mateo County has just launched a new volunteer-based transportation program for San Mateo County seniors age 65 and older. The two-year pilot program is being operated via the Family Service Agency's Intergenerational Center at Fair Oaks in Redwood City.

The Transportation Reimbursement Independence Program (TRIP) aims to support independence and quality of life for older adults who face barriers to mobility in the community. Working on a “neighbors helping neighbors” concept, TRIP reimburses volunteer drivers to transport individuals who face barriers to, or have difficult accessing, public transit or Redi-Wheels.

The program offers a free and easy way for seniors who have stopped driving to maintain their independence and quality of life. Family Service Agency hopes to serve 85 older adults this year with the new program, which launched in Redwood City May 1st.

The program has been modeled after one of the country’s most successful older adult transportation programs, TRIP of Riverside County, CA and draws inspiration from other similar programs. The TRIP program reflects the goals and objectives of the San Mateo County Senior Mobility Action Plan Steering Committee; the County of San Mateo Strategic Plan for Services for Older Adults and MTC’s Lifeline Transportation Program.

Family Service Agency of San Mateo County is a private nonprofit organization that for 56 years has helped children, families and older adults build positive and productive lives through the provision of programs and services including early learning and child care; supervised family visitation and exchange; older worker employment and training; support services for the elderly; family loans and counseling. For more information about Family Service Agency call 650-403-4300 or visit www.familyserviceagency.org.

To find out more about eligibility requirements for both drivers and riders, call TRIP Mobility Coordinator Alan Yosef at 650-780-7546.
