It's June and that means Father's Day is just around the corner. There are lots of events going on this month for men and fathers. See the
Calendar Highlights at left for more information on these events and the article below to access some touching thoughts about dads.

Summer Reading for Kids and Teens
The libraries of the Peninsula Library System offer a summer reading program for kids and teens. The theme of the kids program is "Get a Clue" and can be accessed by visiting www.plsinfo.org and clicking on "Great Stuff for Kids." The teen theme is "You Never Know." Access recommendations for teens at the same Web site by clicking on "Just for Teens."

Also available on the teen Web site are the summer reading lists for most of the local high schools.

Library Catalog Tutorials on the Web
Two new tutorials, on New Item Alerts and Reading History, have been added to the library catalog FAQ page at catalog.plsinfo.org/screens/faq.html.

Community Information Handbook 2007 in Spanish
The Community Information Handbook, updated for 2007, will soon be available in Spanish. To request copies of this free booklet, call 650-802-7950 or email gaggero@plsinfo.org. PDF copies are now available on the Web site by visiting cip.plsinfo.org/cih.htm.

Help at Home in Spanish and Chinese
The new 2007/2008 edition of Help at Home: A Guide to Assist San Mateo County Residents to Remain at Home will also soon be available in Spanish and Chinese. For free copies, call Aging and Adult Services at 800-675-8437. PDF copies are now available online at the CIP Web site, cip.plsinfo.org/hah.htm.

Adolescent Collaborative Action Team Report Released
The Adolescent Collaborative Action Team (ACAT) recently released their 2003 - 2006 Three-Year Report and 2007 - 2010 Strategic Plan. The strategic plan portion was approved by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors at their meeting on May 15. Independence Day is coming soon. The largest parade in Northern California is held in Redwood City, presented each year by the Peninsula Celebration Association.

Community Calendar Highlights

Support Group in Spanish for Latino Fathers
Tuesdays, June 5 - July 10, 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm. This support group for Latino fathers is geared towards those with limited access to their children. The group will be facilitated by a Latino father in Spanish. The class will help fathers create a healthier, more loving relationship with their children and address how to become a better father, husband and member of the community. The class cycle will be repeated through the end of 2007; new participants are welcome at the beginning of any cycle.

Location: Fair Oaks Community Center, 2600 Middlefield Road, Redwood City. The class is free and refreshments will be provided. There will be a celebration dinner at the end of each cycle of classes. Mandated Reporter Training
June 7, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. Children and Family Services is offering training for mandated reporters who live or work in San Mateo County. This training will cover Mandated Reporter Law, CWS Redesign/SIP, Child Abuse Indicators and an Overview of Differential Response. Two CEUs will be offered to LCSWs, MFTs and MFCCs.

Presentation of The Effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Adult Health and Well-Being
June 13, 9:00 am - 12:30 pm; registration and breakfast 8:30 am. The Coordinated Response Committee of the Domestic Violence Council presents Dr. Vincent Felitti speaking on "The Effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Adult Health and Well-Being." Adverse childhood experiences include growing up in a household with one or more of the following: recurrent physical or emotional abuse; sexual abuse; an alcohol or drug abuser; an incarcerated household member; someone who is chronically depressed, suicidal or mentally ill; a mother being treated violently; or emotional or physical neglect. The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study is a decade-long and ongoing collaboration between Kaiser Permanente's Department of Preventive Medicine in San Diego and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

San Mateo Heroes Breakfast
June 14, 7:30 am - 9:30 am. Each year the Bay Area Chapter of the American Red Cross honors individuals and organizations who have shown courage, community spirit and heroism through selfless acts. This year they will recognize heroes in seven categories: Life Saving, Courage, Act of Kindness - Adult, Act of Kindness - Youth, Community Service - Individual, Community Service - Organization, and Animal Rescue or Aide.

Location: Dominic's at Poplar Creek in San Mateo. Tax-deductible tickets are $50 per person. The Red Cross is also seeking sponsors for the event. For further information,

Second Annual Men's Health Fair
June 15, 11:00 am - 2:00 pm. Sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, this fair will feature a variety of Healthy Living tables ranging from Sports Medicine, Body Composition Testing, Lung Capacity Testing, Blood Pressure Checks, Depression Screening, Men's Sexual Health, Dermatology and much more. Participants will receive the latest edition of Men's Health magazine and other giveaways, while supplies last. There will be an opportunity to speak with medical professionals and physicians. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

Dad and Me at the Park

The Fatherhood Collaborative of San Mateo County and the Environmental Services Agency Parks and Recreation Division invite fathers, grandfathers and other significant caregivers to bring their children for a day of free activities together. Pillow Fight with Dad in Palo Alto
June 17, 11:00 am - 12:30 pm. Hand in Hand, a Palo Alto-based nonprofit dedicated to nurturing the parent-child connection, will host their second Father’s Day Pillow Fight. Join the fun and get closer to the children in your life in a series of playful and exhilarating ten-minute pillow fights for children, parents, family and friends of all ages. Create a Father’s Day card at the art table and join in on a sing-along. Food, beverages and pillows will be available for purchase.

Hand in Hand offers parenting classes, workshops, support groups and one-on-one parent consulting in the Bay Area and around the country.

HIP Housing Annual Luncheon 35th Anniversary Celebration
June 21, 11:30 am. This event will be attended by over 400 community members and celebrate HIP Housing’s 35 years of success in helping thousands of individuals and families find a place to call home in San Mateo County through its Home Sharing, Self-Sufficiency, Property Development and Home Equity Conversion programs. The Honorable Jackie Speier will lead the celebration.

Bridges Out of Poverty: Strategies for Professionals and Communities
June 28, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. This workshop will feature advice and lessons for those who work with individuals living in poverty and disadvantaged families. The seminar will help increase awareness of how differences in cultures as a result of poverty affect behaviors and mindsets and how those differences impact opportunities for success.

Participants will be provided with the skills needed to develop action plans to improve services to families with respect to socioeconomic differences in their communities. The workshop will be presented by the Prenatal Advantage Black Infant Health Project of the San Mateo County Health Department and facilitated by Kathryn Estes, CRED.

T-Rex Thunderlizard’s Wild West Revue at Gamble Garden in Palo Alto
June 28, 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm.
Calling all cowboys and cowgirls for hot dogs and Wild West entertainment. Nick Barone Puppets presents an all new half-hour musical comedy cowboy show of prehistoric proportions. A cast of over twenty friendly dinosaurs, dressed as cowboys, will entertain you with songs, jokes and skits. This romp through the Wild West is chock full of dinosaur facts.

HEART Announces Homebuyer Assistance Program
This new program, announced at the Housing Endowment and Regional Trust (HEART) Executive Briefing and Luncheon on May 14, will provide thousands of people who work or live in San Mateo County with financial help to buy homes.

HEART's mission is to meet critical housing needs in San Mateo County. Their "Open Doors in Our Community" Program will primarily target middle-income workers who live or work in county HEART member jurisdictions. (Pacifica, Belmont and South San Francisco are not participating as of now.) Once $1.5 million of private-sector contributions is raised, they will enable people with incomes up to $150,000 to buy a home using a HEART loan in a HEART member jurisdiction. Until now, the program has been funded primarily by 17 city governments and the County of San Mateo.

After HEART raises the funds and finds a financial institution to work with, the buyer assistance program will offer mortgages with below-market interest rates. For more information or to donate to the "Open Doors in Our Community" visit www.heartofsmc.org or call 650-872-4444.

2007 Indicators for a Sustainable San Mateo County Report Released
Sustainable San Mateo County has released their 11th annual Indicators for a Sustainable San Mateo County, 2007 Report Card. The report evaluates 32 indicators of the sustainability of our region’s well being.

The goal of sustainable thinking is to meet our current needs while preserving the ability of future generations to meet their needs. The 2007 Report highlights progress reports from 19 local cities, the county, and the community college district. The report also includes an 11-year trend analysis of key indicators. Senior Center Without Walls
This telephone activity program is offered free to elders in the Bay Area who may have difficulty going out to a community senior center or other activities.

The summer session starts the week of June 4 and continues through August 26. Course offerings include a number of innovative new groups in addition to favorites from past sessions. Activities include bingo, current events, support groups, brain aerobics and health presentations, among others.

Calibration and Instrumentation Training Program
Calibration and Instrumentation is a high demand skill with a strong employment forecast. This eight-week training program is a partnership between the Workforce Investment Board of San Mateo County and the College of San Mateo.

Students will be trained, at no cost, primarily in the calibration of instruments, as well as installing, inspecting, maintaining and repairing the complex and specialized equipment used in industries such as biotechnology, petrochemical, transportation and water treatment.

Students must be proficient in 12th grade math and English, be at least 18 years of age and a resident of California for at least one year. Prior criminal records will be considered on an individual basis. Mechanical or electrical ability or aptitude is a plus. There will be a competitive process for candidate selection for this course.

The program will be held at the College of San Mateo starting June 11 in a new, custom-built instrumentation laboratory. Students will be in class Monday through Thursday for eight weeks from 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Graduates can expect a starting salary of $30,000 - $50,000 per year plus benefits.

Prevention of Childhood Obesity Task Force Tip - 2007 Innovation in Prevention Awards: Deadline June 29
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is accepting nominations for the 2007 Innovation in Prevention Awards, which seek to identify and celebrate organizations that have implemented innovative and creative chronic disease prevention and health promotion programs.

To be eligible, a program must address obesity, physical activity or nutrition. Nominated programs must also have been in operation for at least two years, explicitly state their funding sources and cannot be a previous recipient of this award. To nominate a program or obtain additional information on the awards visit www.prevent.org/awards2007.

Awards will be given in the following categories: Faith-Based and/or Community Initiatives; Health Care Delivery; Healthy Workplace; Large Employer (over 500 employees); Small Employer (under 500 employees); Nonprofit Public Sector and Schools (K-12). The deadline for nominations is 2:00 pm Pacific time, June 29.
