Brown-Bag Lecture: Landlord-Tenant Law
May 17, noon. Learn about landlord-tenant law at this lecture. Landlords and tenants both share in rights and responsibilities when it comes to rental property. For landlords, these rights and responsibilities minimize loss of income and avoid mistakes that can lead to court-imposed fines. For tenants, rights include fair housing, matters of habitability, protection from discrimination and harassment and the responsibilities of paying rent on time and abiding by rental policies. Knowing and understanding your obligation within the rental agreement makes for easier living for both landlord and tenant. Richard F. Kelly, Esq., former Court Commissioner, Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo, will provide an overview of landlord-tenant law and discuss ways to resolve disputes between landlords and tenants.

Location: San Mateo County Law Library, 710 Hamilton Street, Redwood City. The public is invited to attend this free lecture. For more information contact Karen Lutke at 650-363-4913 or visit the Law Library online at www.smcll.org.

New Web Site Encourages Girls to Read
Four young adult authors who call themselves "Book Divas" recently launched an online book community called readergirlz (www.readergirlz.com) to get girls hooked on reading and to share that love with others.

Founders Dia Calhoun, Janet Lee Carey, Lorie Ann Grover and Justina Chen Headley say readergirlz is about celebrating books that "feature strong female characters, connecting girls with stories that will change the way they see themselves, and inspiring girls to have the guts to make history of their own."

Members visit the readergirlz Web site and are directed to a MySpace readergirlz site, where they can chat about anything and everything to do with books and empowering girls. Members who don't have access to MySpace can still participate by visiting readergirlz.livejournal.com or by emailing the authors. "Our intention is to give teen girls lots of ways to get involved with readergirlz!" says Calhoun.

The divas select a book-of-the-month and provide links, author interviews and book party ideas. The site's launch in March coincided with Women's History Month and featured Chen Headly's Nothing but the Truth (and a Few White Lies) (Little, Brown, 2006), a book that includes a racist incident, expected to generate discussion about intolerance and prejudice.

Teen Read Week Nominations
The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest growing division of the American Library Association (ALA), has announced that nominations are available for the national Teens’ Top Ten (TTT) Vote to take place during Teen Read WeekTM, October 14 –20.

Each book had to be nominated by at least three teen reviewers representing at least two YA Galley/TTT groups. Nominations closed on April 1 for books published between January 2006 and March 2007. “Having the nominations available in April allows more libraries to get their teens actively involved in the TTT vote during Teen Read WeekTM,” said YA Galley Chair Edith Cummings. “The list of 25 nominations makes the list manageable for teen readers and gives an excellent opportunity for school library media specialists and public librarians to work together and encourage teens to read the nominations over the summer.”

TTT is a part of YALSA’s Young Adult (YA) Galley Project in which publishers of young adult books provide copies of their recent titles to teen book discussion groups in libraries. In exchange, teen readers evaluate books for the publishers. The votes will determine the 2007 Teens’ Top Ten booklist of the best new books for young adults. Nominations can be found online at www.ala.org/teenstopten.

For 50 years, YALSA has been the world leader in selecting books, videos, and audio books for teens. For more information about YALSA or for lists of recommended reading, viewing and listening, visit www.ala.org/yalsa/booklists or contact YALSA at 800-545-2433, ext. 4390 or yalsa@ala.org.
