San Mateo County Adolescent Report 2007 Available
This report, an overview on the health status of youth in San Mateo County, provides a snapshot of the health of the adolescent population in San Mateo County and makes policy recommendations to improve it. The report is intended to be used by providers, grant makers, policymakers, young people and their allies to identify areas where improvement can be made and to develop plans for actions.
During the 1999-2000 San Mateo County budget hearings, the Board of Supervisors used data and information from various sources, including the San Mateo County Community Needs Assessment, which suggested that teenage sexuality, drug use and violence were serious and worsening public health concerns. The assessment concluded that strategies aimed at reducing these risk factors had not been adequately explored or implemented.
Since the San Mateo County Adolescent Report of 2001 was published, progress has been made in the following areas: increasing the amount and number of sustained adult/child interactions, treating youth as equals and involving them as joint decision-makers in activites and programs that affect them, and establishing a structure that can help accomplish the first two recommendations. To view the entire report, visit www.plsinfo.org/healthysmc/.

Prevention of Childhood Obesity Task Force Tip- What's So Great about TV-Turnoff Week?: April 23 - 27
Turning off the television gives us a chance to think, read, create and do, connect with our families and engage in our communities. According to the TV Turnoff Network, television cuts into family time, harms our children's ability to read and succeed in school, and contributes to unhealthy lifestyles and obesity.
As US Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher said at the kickoff of TV-Turnoff Week 2001, "We are raising the most overweight generation of youngsters in American history...This week is about saving lives."
Here are just a few of the facts: On average, children in the US will spend more time in front of the television (1,023 hours) than in school this year (900 hours). Forty percent of Americans frequently or always watch television during dinner.
Visit www.tvturnoff.org for more TV facts and figures, TV-free activities and ways to take action.
Locally, the Pacifica Collaborative has coordinated a variety of community activities for the week. Contact Julie Lancelle at 650-738-6693 or paccollab@pacificasd.org.
