Multicultural Institute Takes Over Day Worker Program in North Fair Oaks
This innovative program, led by Franciscan friar Rev. Rigoberto Caloca-Rivas, connects day laborers directly with employers using Multicultural Institute’s Web site, www.mionline.org and telephone registration (650-339-2794 to Cesar). Laborers arrange to be picked up by employers at a convenient location or go directly to the work site, thus reducing crowding and competition while increasing safety on the street. The Institute will also offer comprehensive services that address the concerns of local merchants, residents and police, as well as the concerns of day laborers. Visit www.mionline.org for more information.

County Honors Unsung Heroes
The three nominees were recognized and nominated for the Jefferson Award for varying reasons. Ms. Brown, Executive Director of the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center (PCRC), was nominated for her successful effort in expanding alternative dispute resolution and mediation throughout the community, in the courtroom, on the playground, in corporate board rooms and on the streets stopping gang violence. Ms. Gheleta, Executive Director of the Service League, is distinguished by her passion and compassion in providing inmate services, including support for families and probationers upon re-entry into the community. Ms. Rhoades is a former Commissioner with the San Mateo County Commission on Disabilities and was nominated for opening doors to accessibility and as an advocate for those with disabilities.
The Jefferson Award for Public Service was established 30 years ago and is considered the “Nobel Peace Prize” for public service. It strives to enhance civic engagement by recognizing extraordinary work done by ordinary people.
