Give Someone the Gift of Reading
Imagine the joy of reading a book, a prescription bottle, a map, or election materials for the first time. That’s what happens at Project Read, North San Mateo County.

By helping adults learn to read and write better, Project Read volunteers give them the skills and confidence to become more effective at home, at work and in their communities. Free tutor training sessions will be offered at the Serramonte Library, 40 Wembley Drive, Daly City on July 12 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm, July 15 from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm, July 19 from 6:00 – 8:30 pm, and July 22 from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. RSVP Sponsors Homeowners / Renters Assistance Program
Homeowners / Renters Assistance (HRA) is an annual payment made by the State of California to qualified individuals. Payment is based on one’s total household income and a percentage of the assessed value of one’s home. Renters may also qualify for assistance, as a portion of the rent is presumed to have been used to pay property taxes.

Trained HRA counselors, volunteering through RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program), provide free assistance to individuals who need help in preparing their homeowner or renter assistance claim. Click here for available appointment dates and times, or contact RSVP for more details at 650-696-7661.

Shakespeare Gets Searchable
Search-engine giant Google has added Shakespeare to its repertoire.
The Summer with Shakespeare microsite, launched recently by Google Book Search, will allow users to search all of the Bard’s works, which are in the public domain; find famous quotes from his plays and sonnets; browse through a familiar play; or discover a new one.

Locally, the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival will once again be providing their Free Shakespeare in the Park program at sites throughout the Bay Area. Performances will be held at San Mateo’s Central Park on August 5 and 12 at 7:30 pm, and August 6 and 13 at 5:00 pm. Check www.sfshakes.org for all the details.

Roadmap for ATOD Prevention Activities

In 2004, Supervisor Rose Jacobs Gibson initiated a countywide Health Disparities Summit. Community members and stakeholders identified alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATOD) as a key area requiring significant attention. The San Mateo County Health Department took the lead and formed a Task Force that included leaders from community-based organizations, county departments, courts and probation, health care systems, law enforcement, policy makers, schools, and youth-serving organizations, as well as representatives from the Drug and Alcohol Advisory Board (DAAB), the Tobacco Education Coalition (TEC) and the Youth Commission.

The Task Force has published the Roadmap for Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Prevention: A Guide for Community Action. It includes background information, ATOD statistics, an assessment of community needs, principles for action, an action plan, and a list of existing prevention programs. The Roadmap recommends preventive actions to develop support for individuals, changing social norms around substance use, and policies that affect the availability and ease of access to ATOD.

The Roadmap is available online at www.smhealth.org/hppp. To become involved or to learn more about the initiative, contact Cristina Heinz at cheinz@co.sanmateo.ca.us or 650-573-2304.
