Summer Reading Programs Keep Kids Reading
Children lose an average of two months of instruction during summer vacation, or roughly 22 percent of what they learned during the school year. One way to help prevent this is to keep children reading, and a great way to keep them motivated to read is to join your library's summer reading program.

This year's reading program for pre-readers and elementary school children is called Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales. The theme for teens is Creature Features. Fun family programs and incentive prizes further encourage the reading habit. Call your local library for information or go to www.plsinfo.org for local library summer reading events. To read more, click here...

Seeking Nominations
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors and the Domestic Violence Council invite community members to help identify qualified nominees for the 2006 Barbara Hammerman Award. This award is presented annually to one law enforcement officer who has provided exceptional service to victims of domestic violence. Nomination deadline is July 10. To read more, click here...

New Nonprofit Newsletter
CompassPoint Nonprofit Services has a new email newsletter for Bay Area nonprofit organizations called TalkingPoint: News Bites for the Bay Area/Silicon Valley. It includes provocative and informative quotes, polls, and affordable and useful resources. TalkingPoint replaces the Food for Thought newsletter. Check out their premiere issue at www.compasspoint.org. Subscription information is also on the Web site.

Mills-Peninsula's New Women's Health Center
Mills-Peninsula recently opened San Mateo County's first Women's Center dedicated exclusively to providing diagnostics, treatment and education for health issues that exist only in women, occur more frequently in women or affect women differently than men. To read more, click here...

Local Data on Autism and Other Disabilities
According to a 2005 survey of parents, 5.2 percent of children in San Mateo County have a disabling condition.
And separate data show that the percentage of local special education students with autism nearly doubled from 2001 to 2005. This data, as well as city and school district data for children with disabilities, can now be found online at www.kidsdata.org, part of the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health. Choose the Data by Topic tab and select the Disabilities option. The site also includes a section on How to Help/Get Help and a Reading Room of related articles.

Help at Home
Help at Home: A Guide to Assist San Mateo County Residents to Remain at Home is now available in Chinese and Spanish versions in PDF on the CIP Web site at http://cip.plsinfo.org/hah.htm. Printed copies in Chinese and Spanish will be available later this month through San Mateo County Aging and Adult Services Division at 1-800-675-8437.

Grant Opportunity
Balance Bar Community Grants provide financial support to enable communities and organizations to pursue physical activities that enrich their lives. The grant must be dedicated to a project that will provide organization members, as well as community residents, with opportunities to lead healthy, active lifestyles. Only government sanctioned 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations may apply. Grant amounts range from $1,000 to $5,000. For more information, go to www.balance.com/grants and choose the Community Grants option. Application deadline is August 30, 2006.

Reading five books over the summer results in a gain of about three points on standardized reading tests and students participating in a summer reading program are more likely to read at their grade level or above than their nonparticipating peers. The bottom line is that those who read more, read better. Call your local library for information or go to www.plsinfo.org for local library summer reading events.

The library's summer reading programs are free and fun, but the best part is that children will be reading and carrying literacy skills with them for life.
