The Child Care Coordinating Council (4Cs) is accepting nominations for its 2006 Leadership Awards. 4Cs Launches Online Referral Tool
Parents and guardians can now search for child care and preschool referrals online at the Child Care Coordinating Council’s (4Cs) Web site, www.sanmateo4cs.org. Not all child care providers in San Mateo County have chosen to be included in the online referrals. To access the full database of child care providers, call the referral counselors at 650-655-6777, Monday - Friday, 9-5.
Free Training for Qualified Staff
The Peninsula Training Collaborative offers free trainings to community-based organizations and nonprofits in San Mateo County that provide services to children and families in the foster care system or who are at-risk of entering that system. Sample training areas include New Differential Response Protocols, Legal and Ethical Issues, Professional Boundaries, and Cultural Awareness. Visit www.ptctraining.net for complete information.
New Newsletter for Caregivers
“California Caregiver” is a free electronic newsletter especially for caregiving families and friends throughout the state. It includes news coverage, caregiving tips, policy news, treatment updates, new publications information, and advice for people caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s and other disorders. Senior Center Becomes Adult Community Center
As part of a comprehensive effort to refocus and better serve adults age 50 and over, the San Carlos Senior Center has changed its name to the San Carlos Adult Community Center. Its address and phone remain the same at 601 Chestnut Street, 650-802-4384.
New Director at Coastside Opportunity Center (COC)
Cheri Parr is the new Executive Director at the Coastside Opportunity Center, one of the seven core service centers in San Mateo County. The Center is located at 99 Avenue Alhambra in El Granada, 650-726-9071.

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month. Prevent Blindness Northern California (PBNC) provides services to aid in the prevention of blindness. Among the services offered are a preschool vision screening program for children age 3-5, glaucoma screening, an eye safety program taught in schools, and industrial and agricultural eye safety programs. It also provides free publications on diabetes and vision, glaucoma, cataracts, the aging eye and a resource book, "Coping with Sight Loss in Northern California." Some brochures are available in Chinese and Spanish. Home eye tests are available for adults and preschool age children to test their vision in their own homes. Films, audio cassettes and continuing education for those providing community vision screenings are also offered. Click here to read the full record in the CIP database.

7th Annual Mentoring Conference
January 19 and 20.
The theme for this year’s Mentoring Conference, sponsored by Friends for Youth Mentoring Institute, is “Safe and Sound Mentoring.” “Mentoring 101: Core Principles and Practice” on January 19 (location to be announced) focuses on the basics for those who are new to mentoring, who are working with a new mentoring program, or for those who need a refresher. “Achieving Excellence in Programming” on January 20 at Oracle Conference Center in Redwood Shores, features keynote presentations by Dr. Susan Weinberger, also known as Dr. Mentor, sharing from her new book, “Mentoring a Movement: My Personal Journey” and by Phil Cousineau, a writer, filmmaker, photographer and adventure travel guide.

1st Annual State of the Valley Conference

CCAT (Children’s Collaborative Action Team) Monthly Meeting

CCAT is a public-private partnership among child service agencies working to improve the lives of children in San Mateo County. Its mission is to provide leadership to prevent child abuse by advocating, coordinating resources, and raising community awareness through education and training.

Women and Heart Disease 2006: Detection, Evaluation and Management

Noel Bairey Merz, M.D., sponsored by Mills-Peninsula Women’s Health Council, overviews the high prevalence of heart disease in women and why heart disease is under-recognized and under-treated in women. Expanded Services for Teen Victims of Dating Violence
The Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County recently received funding to expand services to teen victims of dating violence. The new project, PATHS (Partnerships to Assure Teen Health and Safety), consists of three major components: training and collaborating with health personnel and school contacts; direct legal and educational services to teens; and participating in community efforts to address the problem.
Teens 19 or under who are being threatened or abused by a dating partner can receive free, confidential legal help and advice by calling 1-800-381-8898 or 650-375-0185 x3315. Callers may ask general questions or may ask for help filing for a restraining order or other action. Anyone wishing to schedule a presentation about teen dating violence and the PATHS program to teens or to service providers working with teens may contact Jenny Horne, Staff Attorney, at 650-375-0185 x3315 or jhorne@legalaidsmc.org.

New Foster Care Project
The Foster Care Project, a new program of the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County, provides the county’s foster children with free legal help in obtaining appropriate education and mental health services. Areas of assistance include special education, school discipline, access to mental health services through Medi-Cal, and enforcement of foster children’s rights related to school placement, enrollment, transfers and credits. In addition to providing advice and direct representation to foster children, the Foster Care Project will train foster children, foster parents, service providers, and other agencies that work with foster children on foster children’s rights in these areas. The Peninsula Jewish Community Center’s (PJCC’s) tailored, self-paced 12-month health and fitness program, Get Fit for Life, begins February 1. Designed for adults 55 and over who exercise less than 60 minutes per week, this program includes an array of exercise classes, a walking program, monthly speakers on health topics, social events, plus on-going monitoring and personal guidance.
