Happy Holidays from the CIP staff!
This edition of the Resource Bulletin provides community information for November and December. Our next e-newsletter will be sent to you in January, 2006.
While many of us are busy helping those who are most in need and spending time with friends and family, let us take time to be thankful for our supportive and caring community.
Core Service Center Programs for the Holidays
The Core Service Centers might be known to you as the agencies that provide general information and referral to resources in the community, emergency assistance in the form of food, clothing and shelter, employment information and short-term case management. During the holiday season, these centers and various community agencies throughout San Mateo County donate food boxes, toys and gift certificates to low-income families. Eligibility and services vary from one community to another, but all agencies appreciate donations of time, money and toys during the holiday season as well as throughout the year. To read more, click
here…
Holiday Volunteering
The holiday season is upon us, and that means The Volunteer Center has produced its annual “Guide to Holiday Volunteer Opportunities.” The Guide is a vehicle for community based organizations to advertise for volunteers who can provide support for anything from collecting toys for a toy drive to sprucing up an agency in preparation for a fresh start to the new year. The Guide also provides members of the community with information about how to get involved this holiday season. To be represented in The Guide, or to find out how you can get involved, visit The Volunteer Center’s Web site at www.thevolunteercenter.net.
San Mateo County Disaster Preparedness Day
The Gulf Coast hurricanes and the seismic devastation in Pakistan have served as sobering reminders that we here in the Bay Area face potential catastrophic events ourselves, natural or otherwise. Therefore, the Board of Supervisors, the San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services, several other county agencies and our statewide legislative offices have organized a countywide Disaster Preparedness Day, set for November 12 from 10:00 to 2:00. Great American Smokeout
This year’s Great American Smokeout is scheduled for Thursday, November 17th. It’s a day when smokers nationwide are encouraged to quit smoking, even if it’s for just that one day. For more information, talk to the tobacco experts at the San Mateo County Tobacco Prevention Program, 650-802-6545, or call the California Smokers Helpline at 1-800-NO-BUTTS.
San
Mateo County Regional Occupational Program (ROP) Registration for Spring Technical Courses
The San Mateo County ROP offers career technical training for high school and college credit in business, health care, information technology, service, and trade and industrial technology. Update job skills or jump-start a new career with no/low-cost, self-paced classes and flexible schedules. Spring registration for San Mateo County residents begins November 30.

San Mateo County Disaster Preparedness Day
The Gulf Coast hurricanes and the seismic devastation in Pakistan have served as sobering reminders that we here in the Bay Area face potential catastrophic events ourselves, natural or otherwise. Therefore, the Board of Supervisors, the San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services, several other county agencies and our statewide legislative offices have organized a countywide Disaster Preparedness Day.
Set for November 12 from 10:00 to 2:00 at the San Mateo County Expo Center, the free event is designed to show individuals and families how to prepare for a large, regional, emergency event that might quickly overwhelm public safety resources. Education is the key for the day. Parking is free, and the first 1,000 families will receive a free gift. For more information, contact the Office of Emergency Services at 650-363-4790.
