Human
Services Agency Implements CalWIN Along with 18
other California counties, the County of San Mateo Human Services
Agency is implementing a new computer system called CalWin (CalWorks
Information Network). Scheduled to launch on October 3, CalWIN is
designed to capture more accurate case information to better serve
Human Services Agency clients. Program rules and regulations will
not change. So far, seven other counties have launched this new
system.
During
this transition period, there may be temporary inconveniences for
clients, such as a longer waiting period for appointments as case
information is entered into the new system. There may be brief
delays in benefits issuance. In addition, community partners may
experience an increase in requests and/or referrals for immediate
services, including food. For more information contact Carolyn Rogers, CalWIN Project Manager, at

County Names Former East Palo Alto Councilman to Head
Department of Housing Duane Bay, Jr., a former
East Palo Alto Councilman and software executive, has been selected
to lead San Mateo County’s new Department of Housing, effective
August 22.
Bay
served two terms on the East Palo Alto City Council. He built two
computer software start-up companies and spent two years as
Executive Director of the Housing Leadership Council of San Mateo
County, a nonprofit whose mission is to make sure that everyone who
works or lives in the County can afford a home here. In taking the
Director’s job, Bay resigned from his position as Director of
Business and Program Development for First Home, Inc., which
administers first-time homebuyer programs for large public and
private employers.
Housing
issues used to come under the Human Services Agency, but the Board
of Supervisors recently created a separate housing department
because of the dire need to provide affordable places for people to
live. For more information on the Department of Housing, visit their
Web site at www.smchousing.org.

VRS
and Goodwill Industries Launch “ReCompute” VRS
and Goodwill Industries partnered to launch “ReCompute,” San Mateo
County ’s first free electronics recycling and refurbishing program.
Residents and businesses can drop off computers and televisions,
working or not, at any Goodwill donation center in San Mateo, San
Francisco or Marin counties. The used electronics are taken to a
refurbishing hub located at the San Mateo County Human Services
Agency Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VRS) facility where VRS
clients, utilizing vocational job training, are employed to
refurbish the recycled electronics. This partnership offers people
with employment barriers and disabilities an opportunity to learn
marketable skills while promoting electronics recycling.
Electronic waste is a growing problem in California.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, about 70
percent of the heavy metals found in landfills come from discarded
electronic equipment. It is estimated that more than 10,000
computers and televisions become obsolete every day statewide, and
less than 15 percent of these are recycled. Since 2002, electronics
have been collected for recycling by other recycling facilities in
San Mateo County at a cost of approximately $20 per monitor. Taking
advantage of the recent electronics recycling reimbursement
legislation, ReCompute will collect electronics for free and
refurbish items for reuse.
