Imagine San Francisco Bay come to life! The Bay Model is a working hydraulic model of the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta System. The Center provides scientists, educators and citizens interested in San Francisco Bay and the Bay Delta an opportunity to view the complete bay-delta system at a glance. The Visitor Center offers interactive exhibits, a nine-minute video orientation and a 1.5 hour general information audio tour. The audio tour is available in English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish.

Open to the public Tuesday-Friday, 9:00 – 4:00; Saturday-Sunday, 10:00-5:00.

California Youth Connection (CYC) is a statewide advocacy organization for foster youth and former foster youth. Members of each local chapter are current and former foster youth who use their experiences with the child welfare system to improve foster care, educate the public and policy makers about the unique needs of foster children, and change the negative stereotypes many people have about foster kids. Eichler: Modernism Rebuilds the American Dream
June 4, 11:00 am. Bay Area architect and author Paul Adamson will present a free lecture and PowerPoint presentation on his book, Eichler: Modernism Rebuilds the American Dream. Mr. Adamson, AIA, holds a Master of Architecture degree from Columbia University and has practiced in New York and San Francisco. He was the co-curator of a national touring exhibit on Eichler homes and has lectured widely on them in the U.S. and abroad. Free van service is available for Menlo Park seniors and people with disabilities.

Dreams Happen
June 4. This seventh biennial fundraiser benefits Rebuilding Together Peninsula. Architects and builders create one-of-a-kind, life-sized children’s playhouses which are auctioned off during the evening. The playhouses will be on display from May 7 until June 11.

Surviving Closer Legal Scrutiny: Fiduciary Responsibilities and Regulatory Requirements

EHP Sharathon Walk
June 18. After a six year hiatus, the Ecumenical Hunger Program (EHP) is bringing back the EHP Sharathon Walk. Registration starts at 10:00 am. This 30th anniversary Sharathon will feature a 5K family walk, a BBQ, music, and games for all ages.

Dad and Me @ the Park

The San Mateo County Fatherhood Collaborative and the Environmental Services Agency Parks and Recreation Division invite fathers, grandfathers, and other significant caregivers to bring their children for a day of free activities to celebrate Fatherhood Awareness Week. Housing Preservation and Maintenance

Bring your lunch and talk about the housing issues that affect the people you work with: emergency repair programs, housing rehabilitation, asbestos, lead-based paint, home modification, financial resources. This is the third in the 2005 Housing Workshop Series sponsored by the Daly City Peninsula Partnership Collaborative.

“The End of Life…Who Decides?” Community Seminar
June 22. Doors open at 11:30 am and the program begins at noon. The $20 admission fee includes a box lunch and complimentary parking in the Mills Hospital parking garage. Mission Hospice is offering this informational seminar on the Advance Health Care Directive and other current end of life issues. Betsy Carpenter, a renowned Advance Directives Counselor, and Janet Rose, Executive Director of Mission Hospice, will address this highly personal topic. They will talk about health care decision-making and the Advance Health Care Directive form. The “Values History,” a companion piece written to give health care decision makers guidance, will also be discussed. Free copies of both forms will be distributed. Audience members who wish to complete their own Advance Directives will be able to do so with the help of the speakers, at the end of the program.

Family Connections Summer School
Family Connections, a tuition-free parent participation preschool for low-income families, will be offering its annual summer school program from June 20 to July 29. In this bilingual (English/Spanish) school, parents participate in preschool classes with their children, age newborn to 5. Parents have the opportunity to learn parenting skills through weekly parent education sessions, while the children learn that school is important all year long and that learning doesn’t stop in the summer! Highlights of summer school include lots of outdoor play, field trips, visits to local parks, and a train trip.

New Day Worker Center
The County of San Mateo, in partnership with El Concilio, opened a Day Worker Center on May 2. The Center is located at 3180 Middlefield Road, near the intersection of Fifth Avenue in Redwood City. It is open Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 6:00 am to 11:00 am. This pilot program will run for 5 months and is being funded in partnership with local merchants. New California Youth Connection Chapter in San Mateo County
California Youth Connection (CYC) is a statewide advocacy organization for foster youth and former foster youth. Members of each local chapter are current and former foster youth who use their experiences with the child welfare system to improve foster care, educate the public and policy makers about the unique needs of foster children, and change the negative stereotypes many people have about foster kids.

For some time San Mateo County has wanted to have a chapter and that goal has now been reached. The local chapter has been meeting since February with a core membership of 10 youth and 6 adult supporters. The group worked to set up its governance, learn how to advocate, and identify a local issue. On June 4, the chapter will be certified by CYC as an official arm of the organization.

San Mateo County Youth Commission Seeks Commissioners
The Youth Commission is looking for teens who like to share their ideas and help make positive changes to the community. The Youth Commission gives teens the opportunity to meet youth from all over San Mateo County. The teens collaborate with Youth Commissioners on boards and commissions including:

  • Drug and Alcohol Advisory Board
  • Mental Health Board
  • First Five Committee
  • AIDS Advisory Board
  • Criminal Justice Board
  • Expo Board
  • Parks and Recreation Committee

Participation in the Youth Commission requires a minimum dedication of 2 hours per week. Contact Anne Hipskind, Supervisor for the Youth Development Initiative of YFES, at 650-591-9623 ext. 108 for an application.
