The Volunteer Center refers volunteers to nonprofit public and private community agencies throughout San Francisco and San Mateo counties. It maintains a list of agencies in need of volunteer help, provides technical assistance to agencies wanting to set up volunteer programs and conducts training workshops in volunteer management.

The Volunteer Center also sponsors the Corporate Partnership Program that matches material resources and volunteers from corporations with community agencies and schools, coordinates the Youth Empowerment Program which strives to improve youth services in the county and coordinates the Human Race, a community fundraising event held the second Saturday in May each year.

Goodwill Donation Drop Off Center
A new Goodwill Donation Drop Off Center opened at 550 Quarry Road, San Carlos, at the rear roll up door at the west side of the building. Donations allow Goodwill to provide job coaching, training and placement services to Bay Area residents who are either disabled or have some other barrier to successful employment. Surviving Closer Legal Scrutiny: Fiduciary Responsibilities and Regulatory Requirements

Laugh and Level With Me - Caring for the Caregiver
April 20, 9:00 – 3:00. Peninsula Training Collaborative (PTC) announces a day of intensive training presented by Dr. Bill Michaelis, international leadership trainer and Professor at San Francisco State University. Dr. Michaelis is an expert on play and its applications to creativity, learning, development, self-esteem, and healthy living for all ages. Laugh and Level With Me will present a sampling of accessible, non-threatening, easily applied, fun and challenging team-building activities. Caring for the Caregiver: Making Sure You Don’t Fall Off the Radar Screen is an interactive, meaningful workshop for practitioners to give them simple stress reduction ideas and techniques for beating burnout and making time for themselves. This training is free to staff of San Mateo County not-for-profit agencies that provide services to children and families at risk.

RecycleWorks Earth Day Sports Equipment Reuse Collection
April 22 (Earth Day) – May 1. RecycleWorks of San Mateo County will collect the following gently used items (and only these items) and distribute them to several nonprofits that can use them:

  • Soccer balls
  • Basketballs
  • Footballs
  • Cleats (tied together)
  • Baseball gloves    
  • Baseball bats
  • Snow boots
  • Snowshoes
  • Sleeping bags (clean)

ROP Open House and Auto Show

April 28. Decades of struggle by workers and their unions have resulted in significant improvements in working conditions, but the toll of workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths remains high. The unions of the AFL-CIO remember these workers on April 28, Workers Memorial Day. 4Cs Leadership Awards – Honoring Outstanding Work in Support of Children
May 5, 6:00 – 9:00 pm. 4Cs (the Child Care Coordinating Council) hosts its 4th Annual Leadership Awards. Tickets for the evening are $100 per person; sponsorships are available. The evening’s events include entertainment by youth mariachis and folklorico dancers, silent and live auctions, and dinner. The honorees include State Senator Joe Simitian, Mr. Al Teglia, The Peninsula Partnership for Children, Youth and Families, and the to-be-announced recipient of the Mary Elizabeth Griffin Children’s Award. Kristen Sze of ABC7 News will emcee the event.

Childhood Overweight and Obesity Conference
Wednesday, May 18. This all-day conference, hosted by the San Mateo County Health Department, costs $50 without CEUs, $75 with CEUs and CMEs. Fee includes breakfast, lunch and snacks. The theme is "A Pound of Prevention is Worth a Ton of Cure!" This session is designed for family physicians, health educators, community workers, youth counselors, nurses, school staff, and pediatricians. Topics include:

Fatherhood Involvement Program
The Fatherhood Involvement Program (FIP) is a new program sponsored by the Child Care Coordinating Council (4C) and First 5 San Mateo County. The program was created to provide comprehensive, father-focused programs and support services through referral, parent education, and support groups for fathers. FIP is designed to assist and encourage fathers and male caregivers to become more involved in the lives of their young children and families. FIP also has stipends for participating fathers to help with court filing fees, hair folic testing for dads in recovery, and visitation fees. Domestic Violence Restraining Order Clinic
Bay Area Legal Aid in partnership with the Court and CORA (Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse, formerly the Center for Domestic Violence Prevention and Sor Juana Ines) recently opened a Domestic Violence Restraining Order Clinic. The Clinic will operate in a workshop format and is staffed by 2 bilingual attorneys. Workshops are currently offered on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9 am and at 1:30 pm and on Thursdays and Fridays at 9 am. The Clinic will provide assistance with applications for Temporary Restraining Orders (TROs) as well as provide information and referrals and give general information about the court process. The Clinic will not provide direct representation for litigants. The Clinic is located at 707 Bradford Street, Redwood City, just 3 blocks from the County Center. Their Grand Opening will be held on April 19. Call 650-701-0850 for more information.

Health of California’s Adolescents
A new report from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, “Health of California’s Adolescents: Findings from the 2001 California Health Interview Survey,” presents a public health profile of California adolescents age 12-17. Topics covered in the report include:

  • Adult supervision and parental monitoring
  • Adherence to safety standards
  • Diet and physical activity
  • Tobacco, alcohol and marijuana use
  • Sexual activity, including pregnancy and disease prevention

Many of the findings are shown by gender, age, income and race/ethnicity. This publication provides data that will be of interest to public health professionals who work with adolescents, educators and parents.

A program of the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health, kidsdata.org is a new gateway to information about children’s health and well being in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. It offers fast access to children’s data, from asthma and weight to school readiness and foster care. Data can be customized by year, locale, ethnicity, age, and more, and the results can be viewed as graphs, tables or maps. Kidsdata.org is continuously updated, offering the latest data on key topics, plus community resources, news, and research.

San Mateo County READS
The adult literacy program once known as Project Read in East Palo Alto and Half Moon Bay has changed its name to San Mateo County READS and expanded its services to residents throughout San Mateo County, focusing especially on the unincorporated areas in the following cities: San Carlos, Foster City, San Mateo, Redwood City, Millbrae, Belmont, Pacifica, Half Moon Bay, Atherton, Daly City, Burlingame, Portola Valley, Woodside and South San Francisco.

San Mateo County READS provides one-to-one tutoring to English-speaking adults age 16 or over who are reading at or below the 8th grade level. The program also offers life and job skills workshops, as well as group classes. For more information about the program, call 650-323-0362 ext. 231 or visit www.smcl.org (under “Services”).
