Parent Child Interaction Therapy Uses Cutting-Edge Techniques
Spurred by the latest brain research and long-documented
evidence that trauma and weak parenting skills can have a
profound negative effect on children, Family Service Agency
(FSA) of San Mateo County has made it a priority to create
a counseling program for young children built on the foundation
of preventative care. The cornerstone of FSA’s focus on preventative
treatment is their Parent Child Interaction Therapy (P.C.I.T.)
program. Currently, FSA is one of only four providers in
California - and the only provider in San Mateo County -
administering this cutting-edge therapy.
Originally developed by professionals
at U.C. Davis Medical Center, P.C.I.T. is available for
children 2-7. As part of the process, a therapist observes
parent and child interaction while behind a one-way mirror.
The parent has a small "bug" microphone
in his/her ear and gets counseled by the therapist as the
interaction takes place. P.C.I.T. is an extremely successful
type of therapy because therapists can address issues between
a parent and child as they arise.
FSA offers P.C.I.T. at two locations: their Family Center at
24 Second Avenue in San Mateo, and their Fair Oaks Intergenerational
Center at 2600 Middlefield Road in Redwood City. P.C.I.T. fees
are sometimes covered by the state and Medi-Cal; otherwise,
payment is arranged on a sliding scale. For information about
P.C.I.T, call Nancy Chang at 650-403-4300 ext. 4224 or visit www.familyserviceagency.org.
