Peninsula Habitat for Humanity Project in Daly City
Daly City, seeing the need to encourage more affordable housing in an already densely populated neighborhood, called in Peninsula Habitat for Humanity (PHFH) to propose a home-ownership development that would enhance the community. The PHFH DeLong Street homes will provide housing and homeownership opportunities for four families, remove an empty parcel of land from the city, and help the city achieve its goals for delivery of affordable housing stock. The three 3-bedroom and one 2-bedroom homes, complete with garages and small yards, will all front DeLong Street directly across from the Daly City BART station, making it very convenient to the homeowners and Habitat volunteers alike. Groundbreaking for the DeLong homes was held in November. With an anticipated 12-month build period, PHFH plans to move families in by December 2005. For more information about this project, contact PHFH at 650-368-PHFH (650-368-7434) or visit their Web site at www.peninsulahabitat.org.

February is Children’s Dental Health Month
A nice smile means more than healthy teeth. Oral health affects children’s overall health. The basics for healthy teeth include eating a healthy diet, eating fewer sweets, brushing at least twice a day and getting regular dental cleanings.

The American Dental Association suggests this as one way to teach children about their tooth care: Take an apple and make a hole one-inch deep in it. Put it in a paper bag and set it aside for a few days. Cut through the place where the hole was made to see the effect of decay. This is how decay spreads through a tooth.

In addition to the Dental Coalition of San Mateo County (see the Resource Highlight in this newsletter), the Child Care Coordinating Council (4C) provides information about low-cost dental insurance and resources.
Call them at 650-655-6770. Also see the article in the Community Calendar of this newsletter about 4C’s fair featuring the Toothmobile, February 12.
